Dear Friend,
The step everyone skips.
This month’s Bolder is about foundations - the work that happens before anyone opens a design file. It’s the least glamorous part of any brand project. It’s also the part that determines whether everything that follows actually works.
Each month, we break it down the same way:
01. The Shift - One strategic insight about brand or business. 02. The Work - One moment from a recent project 03. The Find - One resource worth your time 04. The Question - One question to sit with
Let's get into it.

Design without strategy is decoration.
A business comes to us and says: “We need a new logo.” Or “The website feels tired.” Or “Can you freshen up the brand?”
Fair enough. But when we dig in, the problem is almost never visual. The messaging is unclear. The positioning hasn’t kept pace with the business. Nobody’s defined who they’re actually for.
What feels like a design problem is usually a strategy problem wearing a design costume. And if we solve the visual without addressing the foundation, the brand will look better - but the business won’t feel any different. The clients who see the biggest results aren’t the ones who invest in the prettiest identity. They’re the ones willing to do the thinking first.
Before you commission any creative work, ask: do we know who we’re for and what we’re saying? If the answer’s vague, the design will be too.

Iconic Health Clubs — Three gyms, a fourth on the way, and one identity problem
Iconic had three established gyms across Dublin, with a fourth on the way. Each club had its own personality, its own audience, its own feel. That’s fine when you’re independent venues. It’s a problem when you’re trying to grow as one brand.
The challenge wasn’t visual. It was philosophical. How do you create a single identity that feels premium and inclusive without flattening the character of each club?
We built a flexible brand system - dynamic enough to celebrate variety, unified enough to feel like one family. Ciara Lefroy and her team had the vision for what Iconic could become. We gave that vision a system it could scale into.
