Dear Friend,
The client had the answer all along.
The best brand work rarely comes from a brainstorm. It comes from a conversation —
something a client says naturally, before they’ve had time to self-edit. This month’s Bolder is
about listening harder than talking, and recognising the raw material when it’s right in front of
you.
Each month, we break it down the same way:
01. The Shift - One strategic insight about brand or business. 02. The Work - One moment from a recent project 03. The Find - One resource worth your time 04. The Question - One question to sit with
Let's get into it.

The best messaging almost always comes from something the client said naturally.
Here’s something we’ve noticed across dozens of projects: the most powerful positioning
rarely originates in a brainstorm. It’s buried in a conversation.
A client describes what they do to a friend. An offhand phrase in a discovery call. A line from
a questionnaire that nobody flagged. These unpolished, natural descriptions carry more truth
than anything we could engineer from scratch.
What clients write down when they’re alone with a form is often more honest than what they
say in a live conversation. The questionnaire catches the unfiltered version before they self-
edit.
Our job isn’t to invent a story. It’s to listen hard enough to catch the one that’s already there
- and give it the architecture to carry the whole brand.

Capnua — Finding the five words that said everything
Capnua is a corporate finance advisory firm. On paper, they do mergers, acquisitions, and
management buyouts. But that description misses the point entirely.
Through our discovery process, we kept coming back to the same theme. The founders they
work with aren’t just doing a deal. They’re making the biggest decision of their professional
lives - often after decades of building something from nothing. It’s personal. It’s emotional.
And the people across the table need to understand that.
The line that captured it was “Maximising your life’s work.” Not transactions. Not deal flow. A
recognition that behind every number is a founder who built something that matters to them. Five words. But they reframed everything - the messaging, the tone, the way Capnua talks
about what they do.

A strong focus on consistency, brand systems, and building a coherent brand over time. If
you’re wrestling with a fragmented identity - different messages on different channels, sub-
brands pulling in opposite directions - this is worth subscribing to. Less about inspiration,
more about the practical discipline of keeping a brand together as it grows.

If your brand were a person, how would they introduce themselves at a party?
Not what they do for a living. How they’d actually introduce themselves - the energy, the
confidence, the first impression. Would they lead with credentials? With a story? With a
question? Your answer says more about your positioning than most brand audits. Hit reply
- we read every one. |
